Abstract
281,148. Braithwaite & Co., Engineers, Ltd., and Freeman, R. March 17, 1927. Piles; piles, driving.- Apparatus for driving screw piles including a rotatable screw head is provided with a thin walled metal cylinder connected to the screw head so that it follows the latter into the ground and constitutes a mould for a concrete or like pile. The screw head a, Fig. 1, is rotated by means of a solid shaft b, or by means of a hollow tube c, Fig. 3, the lower end of the shaft or tube being provided with flats which enter a correspondingly shaped socket d in the screw head. The neck f of the latter is formed with a circumferential groove h within which engages an inturned flange i on the thin walled metal shell or tube g. Sections of any length may be added to the tube g as sinking proceeds. Rollers may be supported around the driving shaft or tube at intervals to locate the latter axially in the tube g, and, if necessary, to support it against external pressure. Alternatively, the driving shaft may be made with an external diameter slightly less than the internal; diameter of the tube g. Flanges k, Fig. 3, provided for bolting together the sections of the driving tube c may also serve to support the tube g. When sunk to the required depth, the driving shaft or tube is withdrawn, and the tube g filled with concrete, cement aggregate or other filling. A hollow pile may be produced by using a temporary or permanent inner shell.
