Abstract
281,146. Lewis, F. M. March 14, 1927. Differential gearing suitable for vehicles comprises two driving positive clutches. either of which becomes disengaged automatically to allow the corresponding half-axle to overrun. The width of two driving clutch members 29, 30, Fig. 5, is such that they cannot both be disengaged from driven clutch members 22, 23, which are fast on part circles 18, 19, Fig. 1, and confined within a driving casing 15. The arms 27 of a driving spider are shaped as shown in Fig. 5 so as to cam the shiftable clutch members 29, 30 apart, this separating action being started by springs 41, Fig. 3, in thimbles 40. An overrun shiftable clutch member is withdrawn from engagement by angularly movable means shown as links inclined at a large angle to the gear axis. Thus there is an opposite pair of links 34, Fig. 2, inclined one way, and another pair 35 inclined the other way. In forward running indicated by an arrow in Fig. 5, links 34 pivot on the member 29 to withdraw the member 30 and allow member 23 to overrun. To allow member 22 to overrun, the links 35 withdraw member 29. In backward running, the links 35 withdraw the member 30, and the links 34 the member 29. A link 35 is shown in Fig. 8. One depending stud 36 is a turning fit in a hole 37 in shiftable clutch 30 while the other stud 36<1> has lost motion in a hole 38 in the clutch 29. The link is pivoted upon a cotter pin 42 encircling a spring thimble 40. In a modification there is a link 34 and a link 35 on each of three flats formed on the peripheries of the shiftable clutch members, the spider having three arms.
