Classes 79(2) and 79(3) [Also in Group XXIX] A free-wheeling differential gear on a battery electric factory truck comprises two positive clutches each having a facially toothed output member 20 fast on an output half-shaft 6, and a freely slidable toothed input member 22 moved axially to engage the output member 20, and also driven, by a transverse pin 26 on an input shaft 2 engaging a double inclined cam surface 25 on the input member 22. A spring band 30 anchored at 31 to the fixed casing applies a light friction drag to the slidable input member 22 to pilot engagement and also to permit the driven shafts to rotate freely when the driving member is stationary. The drag brake may, as shown, act constantly, or may (Fig. 4, not shown) disengage from the casing and rotate with the input member in the fully engaged position. The cam 25 has axial end surfaces 36 to avoid end thrust when fully engaged and a spring 34 disengages the clutch. The clutch teeth 33 are inclined at 30 degrees to the axis to disengage on overrun. The input shaft 2 is driven through a wormgear 3 by an electric motor 1, de-energization of which causes both clutches to be spring disengaged, allowing the truck to be pushed freely. The motor 1 is mounted on the axle gear casing and supported by a spring link 16 anchored to one of two cross bars 11 connecting triangular end plates 10 carrying the wheels. The driven axle is centrally disposed and there are axially slidable wheels 58 at each end. Batteries 54, 55 and a controller 53 are provided.
