Abstract

Surface-heating apparatus; surface-levelling machines.- Vehicular apparatus for vitrifying soft ground to form a hard road bed comprises a furnace, suspended in inverted position from the vehicle frame, and lined with refractory material to conserve the heat from internal burners, means being provided for sealing the spaces between the furnace and the ground. The apparatus shown comprises a frame mounted on wheels C running on rails D and carrying the furnace, which is fired by oil or gas burners R. The furnace crown is formed by channel-irons J supporting rows of refractory blocks K threaded thereon and forming runners for intermediate blocks M. The sides of the furnace are formed of refractory material X supported by frame members A<1>, which carry adjustable plates U cutting into the earth to seal the sides. The rear of the frame behind the chimney N is sealed by earth placed in a compartment W and levelled to a suitable camber by an adjustable plate V. The sides may, if desired, be sealed by loose earth thrown against them as the work proceeds.
