Abstract
280,819. King, R. H. June 16, 1927. Surface-heating apparatus; materials, special.- Consists in a method of constructing hard roads from soft soil by burning and thus vitrifying or fusing the soil into a hard material " in situ." The natural surface, or a bank of earth artificially prepared, is ploughed to a depth of about 12 inches, and the resulting clods are burnt, rolled, and consolidated, or the larger hard material left after burning may be separated and used for the foundation. The small material, after further burning, may be treated with tar and spread and rolled on the foundation. A wearing surface of artificial asphalt may be formed by fusing the soft earth and mixing it with bitumen. The preferred apparatus comprises a portable furnace F lined with refractory material and fitted with oil burners D and a chimney G.
