Abstract
280,770. Walsh, V. G. March 7, 1927. Drying by processes special to leather and hides; removing excess of tanning agents. - Leather is dried from the flesh sides only the grain side being kept in contact with a slab or another piece of leather to prevent evaporation. The grain surface may be first washed over with a solution of gelatine to precipitate any superficial excess of tan and the leather is then stacked with alternate layers of anhydrous sodium sulphate spread on the flesh side whereby the excess tan is withdrawn from the leather and the formation of a deposit of tanning material and subsequent oxidation thereof and discolouration of the grain side is prevented. Sand may be mixed with the sodium sulphate in order to facilitate removal after the drying is completed. This drying method may be applied to untanned hides.
