Splitting-machines; stationary - c u t t e r machines; grooving by removing from material.-In a machine for forming welts variation of the position of the evening knife and roll automatically adjusts the position of the grooving knife and roll. A bed roll 5 is keyed on a shaft 2. In a groove 6 in the roll is a hookshaped plate 7 fixed to a block 9 on a shaft 10 axially adjustable by a screw 11. A spindle 14 is clamped to the block 9 and carries a bevelling knife 16 adjusted by a screw 15. A spring urged evening roll 17 driven from the shaft 2 is mounted in a member 21 pivoted on a shaft 22 fixed in a frame 23 slidable in a guide 24 set at an angle of 30‹ in the machine frame. The frame 23 is adjusted by a screw 35 and carries an evening knife 33. The strip raises the roll 17 and the knife 33 against the pressure of a weak spring 40 until a collar 39 engages a. handwheel 38. The roll 17 then alone is raised against the pressure of a strong spring 26. A grooving roll 45 secured on a shaft 46 driven from the shaft 2 is mounted on a laterally adjustable frame 48 pivoted on a shaft 49. The frame 48 has lugs 50 pressed into contact with faces on the frame 23 by an adjustable spring 52. When the frame 23 is moved the rolls 17, 45 are moved equal distances from the fixed roll 5. A plate 59 surrounding the shaft 46 is cut away to house a grooving knife 62 secured to an arm 63 pivoted on a shaft 64. The arm 63 engages the frame 48, as the roll 45 moves away from the roll 5 the knife 62 is moved about two-thirds in the same direction.
