Abstract
416,667. Boot - making machines. UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Brostrom, C. G. ; Lynn, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Feb. 18, 1933, Nos. 5025 and 5026. Convention dates, Feb. 19, 1932 and April 1, 1932. [Class 17 (i).] Sole-laying.-In a machine for roughing shoe parts, e.g. lasted upper margins and sole margins prior to the application of cement for securing the parts together, a driven roughing tool and a work support are so arranged that the roughing tool assists in feeding of the work. A rotary wire brush is set at an angle to the direction of work feed and rotated in a direction to both maintain the work pressed against work guides and feed or assist in feeding the work. Two machines are described, one for roughing the sole margin and the other for roughing the margin of the lasted upper, the machines differing in their work guides. The roughing tool comprises wire bristles 40 on a band clamped to a hub by pins on levers 208 expanded to clamp the band by an adjustable cone 210 as described in Specification 416,415. The brush is driven by a belt 184 and is mounted in bearings on an arm 168 pivoted at 190 and urged upwardly by a spring 182 to a limit determined by an adjusting nut 180. A work table 14 supports the sole and is apertured so that a feeding member can engage the under side of the sole. This member comprises a yielding frusto-conical member wherein a driven hub 142 carries a number of resilient fingers 140 backed by a spreader 152 axially adjustable so that the flare of the fingers may be varied. The table is adjustably carried by a bracket pivoted at 32, and is urged towards the brush by an adjustable spring 46 threaded over a rod pivoted to a depending portion 30 of the bracket normally engaging a flat 50 on a cam having a handle 54 by means of which the cam may be turned to depress the table for the insertion of work. The table carries sole edge gauges 22, 24, adjustable to and away from and about clamping screws 98, 110 and each provided with spring fingers 100, 116 overlying the sole edge. The gauge 22 has a rounded forward edge, and the gauge 24 has a spring finger 104 for contacting with the sole. The latter gauge is carried by a lateral slide 112 adjustable by a lever 122 provided with a knife edged spring plunger co-operating with a serrated plate for maintaining the lever in adjusted position. The axis of the tool is at about 60 from the axis of the feed device, and the bristles move toward the edge of the sole, so that the work is kept in contact with the gauges and the roughing tool assists in the feed. Debris is removed by a suction pipe 216 terminating in a mouth having forwardly extending side and bottom walls. To prevent dust being carried round with the tool a deflector plate 220 is adjustable in close proximity to the brush. The machine for roughing the shoe bottom is similarly constructed except that the table and basket feed roll are substituted by a universally adjustable arm terminating in a member 312 with a convex upper face adapted to support the welt, the end of the member being rounded and thinned to engage the crease between the welt and upper. So that the member may not slip through any slits which may be cut in the welt, its leading edge 406 is downturned. A finger hold 458 is secured to the welt support. In a modification, the welt may be supported by a driven disc with a thin edge. Specification 408,962 also is referred to.
