[Class 17 (ii).] The marginal portion of a sole or other shoe part which is to be attached by adhesive, e.g. pyroxylin cement, to another shoe part, e.g. the lasted edge of an upper, is formed with a multitude of short, substantially non- intersecting closely arranged furrows to increase the surface area to be engaged by the adhesive. The furrows are markedly transverse to the sole edge and of sufficient width and depth to expose the fibres of the leather to the action of the cement for a substantial distance below the surface. The furrows may be produced by a rotary tool 16, as shown in Fig. 1, past which a shoe sole 14 is obliquely fed by a roller 20 against edge guides 24. A coating of non- flowing cement is applied to the roughened surface e.g. by apparatus described in Specification 395,767, [Group III], and a coating of a suitable solvent is applied, e.g. by a brush preparatory to the laying of the sole on the shoe bottom. The pockets in the furrowed surface of the adhesive on the sole hold sufficient solvent to soften adhesive applied to a similarly roughened shoe upper thus obviating a separate application of solvent thereto. The parts are laid and held under pressure until the cement has set.
