Stationary-cutter apparatus. - A skiving- machine particularly for use in scarfing the ends of belting, in which a belt is fed in the direction of its width comprises a fixed lower roll, an upper roll mounted in a pivoted bracket and axially adjustable for different widths of scarf, a knife inclined under spring pressure across the roll gap and connected so as to move axially with the upper roll and means for locally distorting the work and regularizing the margins of the scarf. A main frame 1 carries a horizontal table 2 to which is dovetailed a slide 3, provided with a handle 4 and limit stop (not shown) and carrying a transverse plate 6 with spring clips 7 for holding the belt and moving it towards the roll bite. The smooth lower roll 10 is keyed to a shaft 11 mounted in the frame 1, while the upper roll 14 comprises a sleeve, fixed by a pin 15 to the collar 16 of a slidingly keyed shaft 17 which extends into a bearing in an upper roll-carrying frame 9 pivoted on a shaft 18, under pressure from an adjustable spring 32, to the frame 1. A reduced end of the shaft 17 is held in a bearing 22 mounted in a slide 23 in the frame 9, said slide being held in adjusted position by a spring pin 27 engaging regularly spaced holes 28 in the frame 9. Between the end of the slide bearing 22 and roll 14 is an adjustable plate 36 with hardened face 46 projecting from a block 37 vertically adjustable on a face 38 of slide 23 by a screw 39 with locking head 41. The plate 36 is set slightly below the lower surface of the roll 14 and compresses the material between the block and the lower roll. The latter is formed in two parts, a part 10 with flared end 13 keyed to a shaft 11 and a changeable part 48 pin connected with the part 10. When cutting hard material the part 48 is bevelled in the part directly beneath the plate 36, so that a well defined edge to the scarf is cut. The other edge of the scarf is regularized by the flared part 13. The knife 54 is fixed by a clamp 57 to a member 56 its cutting-edge being positioned by a stop (not shown) and a screw. The member 56 is slidingly and rotatably mounted on a shaft 64 fixed to an arcuate slide 66 rotatably mounted,. and urged by a spring (not shown), in a bracket 67 fixed by a bolt 68 to the frame. The axis of the slide 66 is in alignment with the face of the flared end 13 and the upper edge of the flare. The cutting-edge' of the knife is supported on the upper face of a slide 82, vertically adjustable by an eccentric 84 from handwheel 85 with indicator 86. and the under surface of the plate 36. Means are described for locking the knife spring when the bracket 67 and its associated parts are removed from the machine. The member 5@6 is connected by a ball-ended shaft to the shaft 17 so that when the upper. roll is adjusted axially for varying the width of the scarf. The knife is correspondingly adjusted laterally. A telescopic guard comprising bars 114, 115 is provided. The machine is driven from a pulley through worm gearing and spur gearing connecting the two rolls so that the gears remain in mesh when the rolls are separated. Specification 10653/13 is referred to.
