Grooving by removing material. - A machine for grooving leather and like materials comprises a pair of side by side disc cutters 16 forming the sides of the groove, a cutter 17 forming the bottom of the groove, a work-support 5 against which the face of the work piece opposite to that being grooved rests during grooving, a shaft 6 supporting the disc cutters and a rotary work feeding roll 38 encircling the shaft 6 and having transversely of the latter and relatively thereto a bodily movement by reason of the compression of elastic material between the roll and the shaft. The cutters 16 are spaced apart according to the width of the groove and are mounted on the shaft 6 held in bearings 7 vertically adjustable in a main frame 1 by screw gear. The cutter 17 is transversely adjustable in a carrier 18 adjustably secured to the bearing 7 by screws 21, 28. The lower feed-roll 5 is mounted on a shaft 4 and can be dropped to allow of the insertion of the work-piece by actuating a treadle connected to a bell-crank 64 linked to the bearing 59 of the shaft 4. The upper feed-roll 38 comprises a metal sleeve mounted on a rubber ring 56 surrounding the driven shaft 6 so as to allow a bodily movement of accommodation of the roll in accordance with variations in workpiece thickness. For cutting two grooves simultaneously the cutters 16, 17 and the resilient feed-roll 38 are duplicated and mounted in a bracket 32 carried on an adjustable shaft 31. For grooving irregular straight-sided work-pieces, the latter are secured to jigs with sides parallel to the required grooves, or are positioned on a rectangular jig. An edge gauge 3 is provided.
