[Class 31 (i)] A sole-channelling machine forming a lip and feather is provided with means for bevelling the feather on the side adjacent to the lip and to ensure a constant uniform bevel with variable width of feather. The invention is shown as applied to a machine having substantially the same construction, arrangement of parts, and operation, as that disclosed in Specification 19214/09, [Class 31 (i)]. A slitting knife 12 reciprocates horizontally in the direction of feed of the work to slit the edge of an insole S to form a lip L and a feather F. A bevelling knife 46 inclined at 45‹ to the horizontal reciprocates with the knife 12 to bevel the edge of the feather F adjacent to the lip L. The bevelling knife 46 is adjustably secured by a screw 48 extending through a slot 54 to a slide 50 which is connected by a dovetailed connection to a block 20 carrying the knife 12 so as to be movable towards and away from the work relatively to the knife 12. To ensure that the bevelling knife 46 will move with an edge gauge 18, the slide 50 is provided with a depending arm 56 which enters a notch 58 in a block 60 adjustably secured by a screw 62 to an auxiliary slide 38 which carries the edge gauge. To adapt the machine for cutting a relatively wide lip and bevelled feather at the shank of an insole, and a relatively narrow lip and unbevelled feather round the forepart of the insole, a screw 66 is tightened to clamp the slide 50 to the block 20 whereby the two knives will move in unison laterally, the block 60 being detached by removal of the screw 62 so as to disconnect the bevelling knife 46 from the edge gauge 18.
