Abstract

421,417. Boot - making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and RICKS, F., Belgrave Road, Leicester. June 20, 1933, No. 17619. [Class 17 (i)] Cutting.-A machine for scolloping the breast faces of heels comprises a rotary cutter, a clamp for holding the heel against a positioning plate provided with gauge fingers, and means for swing- ing the plate to approach the heel to the knife to make the cut. The gauge fingers are automatically retracted as the work swings to the tool; also a guard normally situated between the cutter and plate, is swung to out-of-theway position simultaneously with the approach of work and tool. A rotary cutter 25 is driven at some 5,000 revolutions per minute. A knurled tread-abutment plate 57 is pivoted at 53 to a bracket 41 mounted on a shaft 31, an eccentric sleeve 39 between the bracket and shaft allowing vertical adjustment. The plate is urged by a spring 61 against an adjustable stop 59 for adjusting the angle of the plate to the cutter axis. The bracket 41 has an extension formed as a handle 49 for swinging the work against the knife, the limits of swing being determined by adjustable stops 147, 149. Positioning fingers 91 are pivoted to the plate, are geared together at 95 and urged inwardly by a spring. Their ends are inturned for engagement with the breast of the heel. One of the fingers is connected by a link 111 with a lug 117 so that as the work is swung to the tool by the handle the fingers are retracted. The heel is clamped to the plate 57 by a member 63 with a serrated heel-engaging surface, adjustable in the end of a curved lever 69, the other end of which is linked to a lever 77 having an extension adjacent the handle 49 so that the work may be held clamped and also swung against the cutter by one hand. A guard 123 is mounted on a sleeve surrounding a bearing for the cutter shaft, and is urged by a spring to the position shown. When the plate 57 is swung away from the cutter for work changing, a steel tape 127 swings the guard into a position between the cutter and the plate. The member 63 may be arranged to contact with the breast or side surfaces of a heel as well as the seat.
