Abstract
287,639. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Dec. 24, 1926, Trimming.-Relates to sole-rounding machines suitable for shaping a crepe-rubber sole to conform it to an already determined shoe-bottom contour, such as a welt, and provided with a shoe guide having two mutually transverse guiding faces, one engaging the upper surface and the other the edge of the part having the already determined contour. One of the guiding faces may assist in feeding the work. A rotatable sole-supporting roll may be driven to assist the feed. The cutting edge of the knife has a component of motion in the line of feed. The solesupporting roll may be inclined so that an inward bevel may be formed on both the crepe rubber sole and the edge of the shoe bottom. The knife, Fig. 6, has a cutting edge 18, inclined so that it has a component of motion in the line of feed. It is reciprocated by mechanism similar to that described in Specification 13301/10, but at a higher speed with a shorter stroke. The end of the knife is in permanent engagement with a slot 54, Fig. 4, formed in the guide 58 for the upper surface of the welt. The second guiding face, for the edge of the welt, is formed by a roll 64, driven by gearing from the main cam shaft. A sole-supporting roll 14 is also driven from this cam shaft. This roll is supported by a hollow shaft 70, normally pressed towards the work by a spring 108, but retractable by a treadle or hand-lever connected to a rock shaft 118. In a modification, the edge gauge roll is omitted, and the work guide is notched, Fig. 7, to receive the end of the knife. A pair of sole-supporting rolls may be provided, one 164, Fig. 8, on a fixed axis at such an angle to the knife that the latter forms an inward taper, and a second roll 162 on an axis supported by arcuate guides 168 on a block urged by a spring 166 so that the axis tends to stand perpendicular to the knife.
