Bevelling and splitting machines. - In a machine for forming long-bevel portions on each side of a tongue on which a Louis heel is to sit, the margins of the heel-end of the sole are clamped, by a plunger 110. Fig. 4, with spring urged rocliers 131, against the inclined edges of a plate 107, and a hand-actuated knife 106 shears the margins at an angle of less than 45 degrees. A gauge 141 engages the root of the flap and positions the heel. Presser rolls 177 are carried on arms 155 actuated bv cams 159. In a modification. Fig. 2, two chisel-edged knives 41 are reciprocated in inclined guides from a one-revolution clutch. A die-plate 51 carries two bevelled recesses and is adjusted vertically by screws 57. A gauge plate with bevelled edge 61 is adjusted by a rack gear. The heel-end of the sole is positioned by the gauge edge 61 engaging between the apron and the heel-seat and the margins are pressed into the recesses of the die-plate by presser rolls 71. The knives travel in convergent paths to cut the tabs which may taper in two directions.
