Abstract

943,795. Shoe upper conforming machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. March 25, 1960 [March 27, 1959], No. 10582/60. Heading A3B. In a progressive lasting machine having a pair of oppositely driven feed rolls 10, 12 to feed the upper and pull at heightwise, and means 14, 16 for pressing the tensioned margins inwardly across the edge of the shoe, one of the feed rolls 10, has a surface which performs a roughing action on the upper, and this roll is driven at a higher peripheral speed than the other feed roll 12. As shown a third feed roll 30 is secured to a shaft 40 driven equally but oppositely to a shaft 60 carrying roll 12, and roll 10 is rotatably mounted on a sleeve portion of roll 30 and driven in the same direction as that roll but at greater speed and by separate means. Roll 12 is urged yieldingly and adjustably towards rolls 10 and 30, and shafts 40 and 60 which incline to the right from vertical may be angularly adjusted in unison to vary the tensioning action of the rolls. Similarly the inclination of these shafts upwardly and away from the operator may be adjusted. Wiper 14 is reciprocated by eccentric 122 and spring 124. Wiper 16, comprising links 149 which are driven by sprockets 132, 148 and to each of which a wiping member 150 is attached, is normally lowered into operative position by a spring (not shown), but may be raised bodily by operation of a treadle (not shown). The machine also includes a rotatable edge gauge roll 24, and an adjustably mounted shoe rest 26. Roll 10 has a peripheral portion 32 with a series of cutting teeth arranged in a spiral band with chip clearance spaces therebetween. The portion 256 of the lasting margin engaged by roll 30 is not roughened and remains as a safety zone, but if the roughening 254 is to be extended to the further edge, roll 30 is reduced in diameter, and roll 10 arranged to extend thereover.
