Abstract

513,998. Grinding rotary cutters. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). April 25, 1938, No. 12282. [Class 60] [Also in Group VII] A machine for trimming the edges of lasted uppers has a grinding wheel for sharpening the knife. The grinding wheel is normally stationary and below the knife, raising of the wheel bringing clutch members together to rotate the wheel. A stop on a leaf spring warns the operator when the wheel and knife are about to contact. When it is desired to grind the knife, the abrading wheel 21 is raised by a handle 69, which carries a block engaging a groove in a collar 72 secured to the spindle 73 of the wheel. As the spindle is raised, springs 82 raise a sleeve 76, keyed to the spindle, into contact with a constantly running pulley 22, and also raise a flange 77 of the spindle from a fixed bearing 75, which, normally, acts as a brake. Just before the wheel contacts with the knife, a lug on the handle 69 engages a stop screw 85 carried by a leaf spring 86, to warn the operator that further pressure will make contact. A surfacing device 88 clamped to an arm 89 pivoted at 90, may be manipulated by a knob at the upper end of the arm to true the wheel when desired. The axis of the grinding wheel may be adjustably tilted with regard to the axis of the knife to cause the ground surface of the knife to slope upwards inwardly.
