Abstract

277,400. Dehn, F. B., (Penick & Ford, Ltd., Inc.). April 19, 1926. Starch.-In the manufacture of starch from corn, the bulk of the water whch has passed over the starch tables and afterwards has been separated from the gluten, is sterilied so as to arrest or prevent fermentation, and is re-used together with make-up water to treat fresh starch bearing material. The water is preferably heated to about 160‹ F. in order to arrest, fermentation. The process may be carried out in a system such as is indicated in the diagram. The water after use in the separating operations overflows from a gluten settler 1 where gluten is extracted, and the bulk passes to a tank 3, and a sterilizer 5, where it is heated. The heating is effected by the vapours of steep water (dilute .sulphurous acid) previously used for steeping the corn. The steep water is heated in a vacuum evaporator 8 and when sufficiently concentrated is used with the bran and gluten for cattle-feed manufacture. The sterilized water passes by pipes 20, 22 to a cooler 23, where cooling is effected by cold makeup water introduced through pipe 24. The fresh water warmed in the cooler, passes to the filterpress 26 where starch from the starch separators and tables is washed, and thence by pipes 27 and 28 to the wet starch house where starch separation is conducted, or by pipes 27 and 29 to a sulphur tower 30 where it is treated with sulphur dioxide. The dilute sulphurous acid thus formed is passed by pipe 32 and the cooled sterilized water by pipes 33 and 35 to the wet starch house. The three supplies of water to the wet starch house are used there in various proportions for separating operations. A certain proportion (10-20 per cent) of the water from the gluten settler may pass by pipe 36 direct to the steep house, where after being sulphurized, it is used for steeping. The soluble matters contained in the gluten overflow water will thus eventually be recovered in the concentrated steep water withdrawn from the evaporator 8, while insolubles will be recovered with the magma going through the wet starch house.
