Abstract
Oil of high vitamin content is obtained from livers of cods, sharks, or other fish or animals by heating with dilute alkali until the major portion of the tissue is dissolved, separating the emulsified oil by settling or centrifuging, and heating with salts and alcohol to break the emulsion. The livers may first be extracted by pressure, boiling, steaming, solvents, or other known process. In an example, 200 lb. of 2 per cent caustic potash or soda and 100 lb. of livers are treated together to 80-90 DEG C. for 20 minutes, and allowed to settle; the upper layer is removed, saturated with sodium sulphate or chloride, heated with a little alcohol until a brown sticky mass deposits, and settled or centrifuged to separate pure oil.
