Abstract
276,502. Watkins, D. J. G. Aug. 31, 1926. Portage lamps; Lantern cowls.-A wind-proof long-burning lamp comprises an outer cylinder 1 of glass, or with glass or other transparent windows, closed at the base and having concentric therewith at its upper part a plurality of openbased inner cylinders 4, 5 of proportionally decreasing diameters and lengths extending to differing depths into the outer cylinder, providing separate annular air inlet and outlet passages 6, 7. As shown, the outer cylinder 1 is closed at the base by an oil vessel 2 with a burner 3 and has at the top a horizontal flange 1<a>. The inner cylinders 4, 5 have flanges 4<a>, 5a supported adjustably by screws 8 from the flange 1<a>, and the top of the innermost cylinder 5 is closed. The peripheral openings 9, 10 are contracted by depending rims 4b, 5b so that the circumferential area of each opening is equal to the area of the vertical annular passage with which it communicates. To ensure a steady flame a small glass chimney 11 is provided. The flanges 4a, 5a may be inclined downwardly or the intermediate flange 4a may be formed of two plates diverging outwards to form the contracted anular openings 9, 10. In further modifications the intermediate flange 4a has a rim which projects both upwardly and downwardly, and the area of the openings 9, 10 may be contracted by gauze or perforated material of calculated mesh.
