Abstract
274,980. Brown, S. G. May 4, 1926. Gyroscopic apparatus.-In an artificial horizon &c. in which, as described in. Specification 261,117, a gyroscope having a vertical axis is driven through a flexible or universal connection from a driving member, the gimbal suspension is supported so that it can be bodily rotated in azimuth, while the axisof the driving member may be out of line with the gyro-axis and may rotate in a conical path around the said axis. As shown, the gyroscope B is mounted on horizontal pivots in a. ring A which is mounted on horizontal pivots a in a ring c. The ring is provided with a flange d having on its lower surface a groove e between which and a similar groove h on the fixed ring g are disposed a number of balls or rollers j. The flange d is provided with external gear teeth f engaged by a pinion m to rotate the ring c. When the gyroscope is air-driven the air is supplied by a fixed pipe n to a junction box o and thence by a pipe p, rotating with the mounting, to the hollow trunnion a from which it is conducted to a turbine &c.
