Abstract

15,446. Sheldon, C. July 3. Orreries.-The clock-work mechanism for operating a terrestrial orrery is compactly arranged between plates C', C<2>, Fig. 1, and is adapted, through a pinion O<3> gearing with an internally toothed flange F<1> on a ring F connected by rods R to a pedestal H, to carry the earth E and moon M round a lamp L or a ball representing the sun. A wire ring E', supported on the end of the earth's axis, indicates the apparent track of the sun on the earth. The earth's axis W<1> is attached to a shaft I<5>, Figs. 4 and 5, supported in a bracket T' on a carrier-wheel T rotated by a pinion Q<2> once for every revolution of the earth round the sun. A crank-pin I<3> on the driving-spindle I<1> engages a slotted disk I<4> on the shaft I<5>, and rotates the earth on its axis. The moon is carried by a wire W<2> attached at an arm I<13>, Figs. 4 and 5, provided with a roller I<14> to run on a ring T<2>, and pivoted to a collar I<12> embracing a sleeve I<11> integral with a pinion I<10> driven by pinions I<9>, I<7>, I<6> from the arm I<5>.
