Abstract
141,139. Harding, W. G. Jan. 11, 1919. Gyroscopic apparatus.-In order to damp or retard the precession of a gyro wheel or member, an auxiliary gyro-member is provided in concentric relation with, but not rigidly attached to, the main member, the auxiliary member being adapted to rotate in the same direction, but not necessarily at the same speed, as the main member. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary gyro-wheel 3 is mounted within the main gyrowheel 1 on a spherical boss 5 on the driving-shaft 2, and is connected to the shaft by helical springs 6. In a modification, the wheel 3 is connected to the wheel 1 by leaf springs, while, in a further modification, it is attached to the shaft by means of an elastic diaphragm. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the auxiliary member comprises a quantity of mercury &c. 12 rotating within the wheel 1. In a further modification, the auxiliary member consists of a number of rollers floating in forks on a frame mounted on a spherical boss on the shaft 2, the forks being adapted to exert pressure against the interior of the wheel 1.
