Abstract

555,321. Gyroscopic apparatus. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1942. No. 1763. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1941. [Class 97 (iii)] In erecting means for a gyro vertical or artificial horizon having a rotor mounted for angular movement about two mutually perpendicular axes at right angles to the vertical spin axis a mercury or other mass, by moving within a hollow capsule or container rotating at reduced speed about the spin axis renders the rotation variable whenever the gyroscope deviates from the vertical position, and thereby produces torques which erect the spin axis. As shown in plan, a frame 19 is rotatably mounted, by a ball bearing 20, on the spindle 12 of the rotor (not shown) and is driven from the rotor spindle through a spring-pressed friction shoe 23. The speed of the frame 19 relative to the rotor spindle is substantially reduced by an escapement 36, 37 carried on an arm 32 and actuated by a wheel 30 rolling upon the rotor casing 34. A capsule 40 containing a globule of mercury 41 is carried by the frame 19. When the spin axis is vertical, the friction drive through the shoe 23 varied by the centrifugal effect of a weight 39 is balanced by the retarding effect of the escapement to maintain the speed of the frame 19 substantially constant irrespective of the speed of the rotor. If the axis of the rotor departs from the vertical, an acceleration force is produced which urges the mercury globule alternately against the leading and trailing ends of the capsule during successive halfrevolutions of the frame 19 and produces irregular rotation thereof resulting in the application of torques which restore the spin axis to its vertical position and at the same time eliminate the irregular rotation.
