Abstract

1506180 Gyroscopic apparatus FERRANTI Ltd 7 Dec 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 50695/75 Heading G1C [Also in Division G3] A two-degrees of freedom gyroscope has a balanced inertial mass rotatable with the rotor and suspended for limited pivotal movement perpendicular to the rotor spin axis in response to coriolis accelerations and pick-offs delivering signals to a control means which drive a torque motor to nulify the accelerations. The rotor (with spin axis S) is mounted in gimbals 10, 11 rotatable about pitch and roll axesP, R. Torque motors 12, 13 rotate the gyro about the axes P, R respectively. A two-axes angular accelerometer 14 is mounted on and rotates with the rotor. Signals from the accelerometer are resolved into separate pitch and roll signals by a phase-sensitive rectifier circuit 15 to which are also applied timing at gating pulses derived from the rotor. The rectifier outputs are fed along with external erection signals to amplifiers 16, 17 which feed the motors 12, 13. The accelerometer comprises a balanced bar 25 supported by two bendy strips 24 of Piezo-electric material; the strips 24 are secured to blocks 22 on a plate 21 which is mounted on the rotor.
