Abstract

549,893. Damping vibrations. ARNOLD, R.N., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13223. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] Torsional oscillations of a rotating or non-rotating shaft 1 about its axis X-X produce vibratory precession of a gyroscopic system having a definite natural frequency of vibration about its precessional axis Y-Y on which is mounted energy absorbing means 11. Torsional or other vibration may be converted into torsional vibration of the shaft by gearing 2, 3 or 2, 4. The gyroscope 7 rotates about axis Z-Z and is mounted in a gumbal 8 carried by bearings in brackets 10 on the disc 6 secured to shaft 1. Movement of the gimbal 8 is limited by springs 13, 14 selected to give a predetermined natural frequency about axis Y-Y. Vibrations are absorbed by the fluid or other damping means 11. Where the system is in operation, the principal axis Z-Z is approximately at right angles to the axis X-X. If the shaft 1 is rotating, springs 13, 14 are adjusted so as to give an initial bias of the axis Z-Z towards position Z<SP>1</SP>-Z<SP>1</SP> so that the gyroscopic torque due to the mean rotational speed of shaft 1 will maintain the system in position Z-Z.
