Abstract

550,673. Course recording apparatus; maps. MASON, W. H. Oct. 9, 1941, No. 13040. [Class 97 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] The position, speed, and direction of aircraft, ships, &c, are determined by an apparatus comprising a globe map which is so mounted and actuated as to maintain its alignment or relative position with regard to the earth constant, and means for viewing the globe in the direction of gravity. A vertical ring 5 having a lens 5a at its uppermost part is carried by a stand 9 mounted so as to be rotatable in azimuth. Pivoted to the ring 5 is a second ring 8 carrying the globe map 7. The map 7 contains two gyroscopes 10 driven by a motor 11 the gyroscopes and motor being mounted on a clock casing 12 the assembly allowing rotation of the globe map 7 about its polar axis. The clock movement is geared to the casing 12 and drives a shaft 14 which is fixed to the globe map. The result is that the globe map maintains polar and geographical alignment with the earth and the centre of the lens 5a denotes the position of the aircraft at any time the speed and direction of which may be deduced from its position in relation to the globe map 7.
