Vacuum tubes.-A part of the wall of a discharge tube is kept free of gettering material by means of a metallic member of tubular, conical. or funnel shape, formed of wide mesh wire gauze or of a wire. spiral or helix, which is connected with the cathode, and extends so that the other end is in contact with, or approaches closely to the glass wall. In plan view the coil may be circular, oval, square, or rectangular. Several such members may be mounted in a tube. Wires or strips may be provided at the end of the coil &c. so as to make contact with the deposit on the wall.
