Abstract

274,373. Holden, F. Feb. 22, 1927. Electric clocks. - The balance 5 is electrioally maintained by a coil 14 on the balance staff 4, the circuit of this coil being completed through a contact on the staff which contacts with, and moves, a second pivoted contact. This second contact is returned to normal by a gravity - controlled pivoted member. The stationary magnet is a substantially rectangular frame of cobalt steel formed by plates 18, 19, end blocks 20, 21 and pole pieces 16, 17. The steel contains 30 per cent to 40 per cent of cobalt. The balance drives the hands through eccentric 41, fork 42 on arm 43, shaft 44, arm 45, pawl 46, ratchet 47, and gearing 48, 49. An arm 13 on the balance staff ciarries the first contact 24 which moves the second contact 25, rigid on a spindle 26 having a flat upon which bears a plate spring 29 rigid with a frame 30 oscillating about an horizontal axis. As the contact 24 moves the contact 25, an edge of the flat 28 compresses the spring 29 and rocks the frame 30. When the balance staff returns the weight of the frame 30 returns the shaft 26 to normal. The complete circuit for the coil is from source of current to spindle 4, lead 22, coil 14, conductor 23, contact 24 (insulated from spindle 4), contact 25, conductor 27 and to the other side of the source of current.
