Universal joints comprise internally-concave shaft-members a, b, Fig. 10, embracing an intermediate member l formed as shown in Fig. 2, by the perpendicular intersection of two cylinders. one or both of the members a, b being formed into a closed loop, as by holts f and distance-pieces. The part l may be generated by cylinders of unequal diameter, and may be made hollow by coring, by removing metal from the solid, or by welding together four pieces cut from tubing, as shown in Fig. 8. One or more grooves c may be cut in each face of the parts a, b, l, and elastic rings d sprung into them to assist torque transmission, holes e being provided for the insertion of a tool to compress the rings when the joint is dismantled. Rotation of the rings may be prevented by stops &c. The parts a, b may be split, as along the line CC, and the rings d made integral with the inner or outer parts. In a modification, the member l, Figs. 12 and 14, has its inoperative portions hollowed out, as shown at j, and is provided with ribs d<1>, d<2>. The ribs d<1> engage a grooved ring a<1> having notches m at one side to give passage to the ribs when turned through 90‹, while the ribs d<2> engage grooved blocks b<1>, b<2> bolted &c. to a cup k secured to a shaft &c. Lubricating passages or chambers may be provided in either form of joint.
