Description

Patented Dee. lll, 1923.
UNET@ EDGAR DALPHIN RICHARDS, OF MONROE, LOUISIANA.
ECCENTRIC.
Application filed March 7, 1922.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it lrnoivn that l, EDGAR D. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Monroe, in the parish of Ouachita and State of Louisiana., have invented a new and Improved Eccentric, of which the following is a description.
My invention While capable of a Wide range of use is especially useful when used in connection With valve gears of different types. The invention has for its general object to provide an eccentric that may be applied to a shaft or axle Without disturbing the latter', the parts of the eccentric being sectioned to be applied laterally to the shaft and clamped in position.
llhe nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and characteristics Will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference'is to be had 'to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specifcation, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure l is an elevation of an eccentric embodying my invention used in connection with an eccentric rod adjustable for lengthening or shortening Without taking down the rod and eccentric.;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2,
Figure 1.
In the illustrated example of my invention the numeral 10 indicates an eccentric strap of the eccentric rod 11 and the numeral 19. designates generally a sectional eccentric block. rlhe strap 1() is divided into sections having lugs 13 one or more of which has an oil hole 13, A U-bolt 14 is employed embracing one-half section and extending through the lugs of the other half section and secured by nuts 15.
rllhe eccentric block 12 is divided into sections 16, 17 overlapping at their adjacent edges as at 18. it one side of the eccentric a separate plate 19 is employed, the other side having a flange 20 directed radially outward, the flange 2O and the plate 19 thus producing an annular channel accommodating eccentric strap 10. Bolts 21 are employed passing :through the plate 19 and through the body of the eccentric 12 at the periphery, certain of said bolts passing through the overlapping portions 18 of the eccentric.
Besides the transverse bolts 21 securing the sections of the eccentric block 12 to one Serial No. 541,636.
another I provide a U-bolt 23 embracing the shaft (not shown) at the one half Section and extending through holes 24 in the other section 16 of the eccentric block, said bolt 23 having nuts 25. The U-bolt 23 permits of adjustment to give the eccentric a positive or a negative lea-d. 0n the U- bolt 23 is a key 22 adapted the engage in a lteyivay of the shaft so that When the bolt is tightened up the sections 16. 17 will be held in clamped relation and held to the shaft. Numeral 27 indicates a ring or runner Within the eccentric strap 10.
adjustment of the stroke can be produ ed through the medium of a turnbuclrle which is interposed in the eccentric rod, 1l, the adjustment for a longer or a shorter stroke making for the quick adaptation of the invention, Without taking down of the eccentric to different valve gears such for example, the Stevenson, the i/Valschaert, Southern, Young, and Baker gears.
l would state in conclusion that While the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, l do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A. sectional eccentric for shafts, comprising a pair of sections jointly presenting a bore for the shaft, each of said sections having an integral flange projecting radially outward at one side, and a plurality of transverse bores through their Walls, one of said sections presenting a groove in the face forming the bore, the other section presenting a pair of bores adapted to align with the ends of said groove, a U-bolthoused in said groove and projected through said bores for clamping said other section to the shaft, an annular plate formed With openings alignable with said transverse bores arranged at the opposite side of said flange, said plate and said flange forming an annular groove therebetween at the outer circumference of the joined sections for receiving an eccentric strap, and bolts through said transverse bores and openings for detachably securing said annular plate and said sec-tions together.
