ADJUSTABLE TIMING GEAR.
Application filed May 12, 1924. Serial No. 712,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. ELKING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Adjustable Timing Gear, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to new and useful improvements in timing gears principally adapted for use in connection with internal combustion engines and has for its principal object to provide a means for taking up the wear caused by the meshing of the timing gear with the gear on the crank shaft.
One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a means whereby the timing gear may be adjusted to compensate the worn gear teeth and to this end I provide a timing gear which comprises a pair of complementary sections which are adapted for circumferential adjustment with respect to each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide a means for holding the complementary sections of theadjustable timing gear in adjusted position wherebythe timing gear will properly and efliciently operate.
A still further object of the invention is i to provide an adjustable timing gear of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:

Figure 3 is a similar section taken approximately on line 33 of Figure 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my adjustable timing gear and the same comprises the main section 2 which is provided with the hub portion 3, the latter being externally threaded in the manner shown at 4 and for the pur- 6 which is adapted to abut the main section in the .manner clearly shown in Figure2 of the drawing, whenin position on the hub. The supplemental section is also. provided with gear teeth? in the periphery thereof .which are adapted to cooperate with the gear teeth 5 formed. in the periphery of the main section 2 and the gear teethmay be of any conventional type such as the straight or spiral forms and I do not wish to limit myself-to any particular kind of gear teeth to be used for the purposes of carrying out the objects of the present invention.
Extending through the main gear section 2 are the spaced openings 8 and 9 respectively and the upper face of the main section is provided with the counter-sunk portions 10 and 11 respectively, the same being preferably arranged to cooperate with the openings 8 and 9 in the manners clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. The supplemental section 6 is provided with the threaded apertures 12 and 13 respectively which are arranged to cooperate with the counter sunk'portions 10 and 11 provided in the main section 2 and threaded through the openings 12 and 13 are the adjusting screws 14 and 15 respectively, the inner ends of which are provided with the tapered points such as are shown at 16 and 17 respectively in the drawing. ,The tapered points are adapted to engage the counter sunk portions provided in the main gear section 2 and for the purpose of holding the adjusting screws in their proper adjusted positions, I provide the lock nuts 18 and 19 respectively, the same being threaded on the adjusting screws 14 and 15 and being further adapted to be seated in the countersunk portions 20 and 21 provided in the outer face of the supplement gear section 6 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 3. i
