Application filed February 28, 1908. Serial No. 418,324.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WALLACE MINARD, a citizen of the United States, residin at Oil City, in the. county of Venango and tate of 5 Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Drill-Rod Coupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rod couplin s and more particularly to improved means or ef .0 fecting the union of-the adjacent ends of sucker rods.
The object of the invention is to provide a coupling capable of being quickly placed in position on the adjacent ends of the rods to .5 be united, and b means of which said rods may be efiectual y locked against accidental separation during the drilling operation.
A further object, is to provide a coupling including a s lit sleeve or clamping member Eet formed therein for the reception of the terminal heads of the rod sections to be united, said heads being held within the clamping member by means of a tapering. sleeve engaging the exterior walls member.
A still further object of the invention is generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efiiciency.

Similar'numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawin The improved coupling forming the sub- 0' ject matter of the present invention is especiall designed for uniting the adjacent ends 0 sucker rods and in Fig. 1 of the drawings is shown in position on a sucker rod in which 5 designates one section and 6 the mat- 5 in section.
Disposed at the juncture of the rod sections 5 and 6 is a clamping member preferably formed in two sections 9 and 10 each having one end thereof extended laterally to form an annular flange 11 adapted to bear against the adjacent collar 8.
The members 9 and 10 are formed with chambers adapted to register with each other to form a pocket 12 for the reception of the heads 7, there being shoulders 13 constituting the end walls of the pocket and adapted to bear against the outer faces of the heads 7 when the members 9 and 10 are assembled thereby to lock the heads in contact with each' other.
The exterior walls of the sections 9 and 10 constituting the split clamping member are inclined or tapered for engagement with a correspondingly tapered clamping sleeve or collar 14, which latter, bears against the flange 11 and is locked in engagement there with by a split key 15.
The key 15 is preferably in the form of a ring and is interposed between the reduced end of the sleeve 14 and the fixed collar 8 on the section 5 with its inner face bearing against the "adjacent end'of the sections 9 and 10 constituting the clamping member. Suitable grooves or recesses 16 are preferably formed in the sections 9 and 10 on each side of-the socket 12 for the reception of oil or other lubricant.
By making the heads 7 cylindrical in shape, said heads are free to rotate within the socket 12 so as to permit movement of one rod section relatively to the other withor collar 14 forced downwardly in engagee ment with the exterior walls of the sections 9 and 10, the locking ring or key 15 bein subse uently interposed between the reduce end 0 the collar 14 and the adjacent fixed collar 8 and the walls of said collar at the split portion 16 thereof pressed inwardly with a chisel or other suitable tool.
The flanges 11 of the sections 9 and 10 are preferably provided with segmental recesses or depressions 17, the walls of which incline downwardly towards the reduced end of the clamping collar 14 so that after the ring or key 15 is removed the point of a chisel may be inserted in the depressions 17 to assist inv forcing the collar 14 ofl the split clampingmember when it is desired to detach the rod sections 5 and 6 for any purpose.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and eflicient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with mating rod sections having terminal heads, of a split member embracing the rod sections and having a socket for the reception of the heads, a clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the split member, and a flange projecting laterally from one end of the split member and having a depression formed therein and extending in the direction of the clamping sleeve.
2. The combination with mating rod sections having terminal heads and fixed collars, of a split member embracing the rod sections and having a socket formed therein for the reception of the heads, a clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the split member, and a locking key interposed between the split member and adjacent fixed collar and bearing against the clamping collar.
3. .The combination with mating rod sections each having a terminal head and a fixed collar, of a clamping member including separable sections each provided with a laterally extending flange, said sections being provided with interior chambers adapted to register with each other to form a socket for the reception of the heads of the rods to be united, a sleeve engaging the exterior Walls of .the separable sections, and a locking key interposed between the clamping sleeveand fixed collar and bearing against the adjacent ends of'the separable sections.
4. The combination with mating rod sections each having a terminal head and a fixed collar, of a split member including sep arable sections each having a laterally extending flange adapted to bear against the fixed collar of one of the rod sections, a clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the separable clamping sections, and a split ring interposed between theclamping sleeve and the adjacent fixed collar and bearing against the adjacent ends of the separable sections.
5. The combination with mating rod sectionseach provided with a terminal head and a fixed collar, a split clamping member including separable sections having tapering ,exterior walls and each provided with a flange adapted to bear against the adjacent fixed collar, a correspondingly tapering clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the separable sections, and a locking key interposed between the clamping sleeve and the adjacent fixed collar and bearing against the reduced ends of the separable sections. 6. The combination with mating rod sections each having a terminal head and a fixed collar, of a split clamping member having tapering exterior walls and provided with a socket for the reception of the heads of the rods, said split clamping member being provided with a laterally extending flange adapted to bear against the fixed collar on the adjacent rod section, a correspondingly tapering clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the split member, and a split locking ring interposed between the clamping sleeve and the fixed collar on the adjacent rod section and bearing against the reduced end of the split clamping member, there being depressions formed in the flanges of the split member and having their walls inclined in the direction of and extending to the enlarged end of the clamping sleeve.
7. The combination with mating rod sections having terminal heads and each provided with a fixed collar, of a split clamping member including separable sections each having their interior walls providedvwith a chamber adapted to register with the chamber of an adjacent section for the reception of the terminal heads of the rod sections, a flange extending laterally from each section of the split clamping member and having a depression formed therein the walls of which are inclined, a tapering clamping sleeve engaging the exterior walls of the separable sections, and a split ring interposed between the clamping sleeve and the fixed collar on the adjacent rod section and bearing against the reduced ends of the separable sections, there being grooves disposed on opposite sides of the chambers in the separable sec-
