Spindle apparatus; spindle-driving apparatus; guards and protectors for machinery, arrangement and disposition of.-An electric motor for use in connection with the manufacture of artificial silk has a driving-shaft sufficiently long and thin to be flexible so as to allow the driven object, such as a spinning box or pot, to rotate about its dynamical axis, and a limiting stop such as a surrounding hollow shaft rotates with the driving shaft to prevent undue flexure. The motor comprises an aluminium or other casing 1, a squirrel-cage rotor 2 carried by a bell 7, and a stator 3 secured to a spindle 4 carried in an end bell 24. The rotor bell has secured to it a hollow shaft 11 rotatable in spaced bearings 14. A flange 28 on the casing 1 is secured to a fixed support 27 through the medium of a resilient rubber or other ring 29. The rubber ring serves to prevent vibration being transmitted from the spinning frame to the motor and vice versa. The flexible shaft 12 carries the spinning pot or box and a cone 43 which, together with a cone 39 on the motor casing and the rubber ring 29, serves to exclude - spilt acid from the motor. In a modification, the bearings are at opposite ends of the rotor and the hollow shaft projects beyond the casing. Instead of the resilient ring 29, a number of rubber knobs distributed around the frame may be employed.
