Motors, cooling; casings and supports; driving arrangements; terminals and accessories, mounting on machines.-An electric motor for driving textile spindles or other drives at high speeds is mounted under the fly frame with its shaft extending upwards to form the spindle and is cooled by air passing through conduits on the motor casing and in the bearing wall, the air being drawn in and thrown outwards by a screen-plate carried by the shaft. The motor as a whole may be interchangeably mounted in the fly frame without the use of screwed joints. Fig. 1 shows an alternating-current motor with its rotor shaft carried by an upper bearing 7 having ducts 8. These ducts, together with the ribbed surface 6 of the casing, form channels for the cooling air drawn in and ejected, as shown by the arrows, by a screen-plate 9 on the shaft 4 which is extended to form the textile spindle. The screenplate may be massive enough to act as a flywheel. Fig. 3 shows a spindle motor detachably mounted in the fly frame 13 and retained by springs 18 which engage a slot 16 in the member 13. The motor casing carries a push-button switch 23 and spring terminal contacts 22 which engage bare current bars 21 under the fly frame when the motor is pushed home. This elastic mounting enables the spindle to adjust its position freely when running at high speeds. Cooling is effected by air drawn through ducts formed in the bearings and, continued by ribs on the motor casing and an enclosing shell 24.
