Regenerators of the " Stein " type in which vertical conduits 14 for the air to be heated are formed by hollow bricks 13 superposed and placed in rows, the spaces between the rows constituting the passages for the products of combustion and being subdivided horizontally by slabs or tiles 21, 22, have these passages 17 lined with bricks 18, the bricks and tiles breaking joint. The air to be heated and the products of combustion are respectively forced and drawn through their respective passages. The bricks 18 are hollow and fill the passages 17 and may be divided horizontally by a web 23 to form passages 19 for the products of combustion. Shoulders 20 on the bricks 13 carry the tiles 21, 22 and the bricks 13 are supported on apertured tiles 12 resting between piers 11.
