380,754. Checkerwork for regenerators. LœNGEN, R., Erkrath, near D³sseldorf, Germany. April 28, 1932, No. 12227. [Class 51 (i).] In a checker brick for Cowper stoves, regenerators, &c., having one or more hollow spaces 3 forming vertical channels when the bricks are built up, projections 5 are provided on one or both of the end surfaces to space the layers of bricks. The intersecting walls 1, 2 form vertical channels 3, the outer walls 4 having half the thickness of the walls 1, 2 so that when the bricks are placed together the channels will be surrounded by walls of equal thickness. The projections 5 are symmetrically arranged on one or both end faces of the brick and space the layers apart a distance equal to or less than the thickness of the walls 1, 2. The projections are continued through the whole height of the brick forming columns 6 which extend vertically throughout the checkerwork and are of such thickness that they do not become heated to softening point at the central core. The bricks may be offset in adjacent layers. Fig. 5 shows a form in which the outer walls are omitted, and the projections 5 are provided on only one end surface and engage in shallow recesses 7 on the opposite surface.
