Abstract

272,366. Polson, W. R., and Evans, H. C. Sept. 27,1926. Vacuum apparatus. - Apparatus for raising liquids comprises two chambers 5, 6 connected by pipes 30, 31 to the liquid supply and by pipes 40 to an intermittently operated valve 59 controlling the alternate admission of suction and atmospheric pressure to the chambers. When a chamber is full, a float valve 46 closes the end of the pipe 40 to prevent liquid from entering the pipe. The suction is produced by a pump 10 which exhausts air from a chamber 3 communicating with the valve casing by a pipe 77. The valve has two through ports 65, 66 so arranged that when the port 65 connects one pipe 40 to suction through a passage 73 and pipe 77, the port 66 connects the other pipe 40 to atmosphere through a branch pipe 52 and a port 71. Thus while one chamber 5 is filling, the other is discharging through an automatic valve 23. The crankshaft 18 of the pump drives the valve through gearing 88, 87, 90 and a tumbler lever 91 engaging arms 82 on the valve spindle. In another form, the valve is operated by floats in the chambers 5, 6 through a flexible connection on a winding drum, and a tumbler lever engaging arms on the valve spindle. The pipes 52 for admitting air may be replaced by channels in the valve casing. The chamber 3 may be omitted.
