Abstract

227,242. Allen, T. G. Nov. 8, 1923. Air and gas compressing and exhausting apparatus, applications of; direct air pressure apparatus, automatic.-In a system of raising liquids employing the static pressure between two liquid levels 1, 2, and having a number of closed containers or open and closed containers at successive heights above the level of the liquid to be raised, the closed containers communicating by air conduits with an operating chamber arranged at or near the surface of the low level liquid, or in a position between the two liquid levers,-two operating chambers A, A<1> at about the same level, and a single series or column of closed containers C - - C<4> or of open and closed containers are used, the closed containers being connected to the air conduits B, B<1> of the operating chambers A, A<1> in alternate manner, and means, such as a valve A<4>, being provided, operated by the working of the system for controlling the inlet and outlet of water to and from the chambers A, A<1> and causing them to operate alternately. The chambers C - - C<4> are superposed in the form of a column and are interconnected by pipes c<1> - - c<4> provided with valves or liquid seals and dipping into the liquid in the vessel. When the chamber A is filling and A<1> is discharging, pressure is produced in the pipe B and its connected chambers C<1>, C<3>, and suction is produced in the pipe B<1> and its connected chambers C, C<2>, so that water is forced from the chambers C<1>, C<3> through the pipes c<2>, c<4>, and is drawn into the chambers C, C<2> through the pipes c, c<2>. When the chamber A' is filling and A is discharging, the process in the pipes B, B<1> and chambers C - - C<4> is reversed. If the chambers A, A<1> are arranged at or near the surface of the low level water 2, the system works by pressure only. The valve A<4> may be operated in the manner described in Specification 217,654. According to the Provisional Specification, the system may be connected to atmosphere at the end of each pressure operation in the manner described in Specification 207,838.
