Abstract
100,056. Kawakami, S. Feb. 5, 1915, [Convention date]. Driving pumps; packing drums &c.-In a submersible electrically driven pumping unit comprising an electric motor k and a pump d, which is shown as of the centrifugal type, but may be a rotary or plunger pump, means are provided for removing from the casing m any water which may leak past the stuffing- box y. The means comprise a well x, and a tube z<1> leading into a suction pipe r, the tube being closed by a float y<1> when the well is empty. The interior of the casing m is at atmospheric pressure, and to get the pressure in the pipe r below atmospheric, the pipe may be constricted, and a pressure-reducing valve n may be fitted in the pipe. The valve stem is secured to a diaphragm t, which has atmospheric pressure on the upper side and fluid pressure on the underside. The stem may be extended and acted on bv an adjustable spring u. A pipe z supplies fluid under pressure to the stuffing-box y to prevent leakage of air into the pump. The motor and pump shafts are connected by a centrifugal clutch c. The motor connexions are led in through tubes joined to the casing at i, j. The tubes are of different length and serve to bring cooling-air to the motor. Cooling-ribs h may be formed on the casing. The diaphragm l is perforated in the top half. Stop valves v<1>, w<1>, Fig. 2, are provided in the delivery and suction pipes respectively, and are opened, when the motor is started, by an electromagnet r<1>, p<1> and levers as shown.
