Catalytic agents, preparation of; hydrogenated organic compounds, catalytic production of.- Butyraldehyde is obtained bv treating crotonaldehyde in the liquid phase with hydrogen under a pressure not exceeding 30 atmospheres in the presence of nickel, the process being interrupted before appreciable quantities of butyl alcohol are formed. The reaction is preferably effected at a raised temperature and under such conditions that the liquid and the gas are thoroughly mixed. In examples, crotonaldehyde is treated at 90- 100‹ C. with hydrogen at 10-20 atmospheres. pressure in the presence of a nickel-kieselguhr mixture, containing 15 per cent of nickel, prepared by precipitating nickel carbonate or oxide on kieselguhr and reducing with hydrogen. The reaction is effected, in an autoclave fitted with an agitator, or a large excess of hydrogen may be blown through the liquid.
