Abstract
Iron compounds present in synthetic alcohols prepared by the catalytic hydrogenation of oxides of carbon under pressure are removed by subjecting the impure alcohols to prolonged treatment with alkali, with or without stirring, at ordinary or raised temperatures. Advantageously the liquid is aerated either at the commencement of or throughout the treatment. In an example, crude synthetic methanol is allowed to flow over solid caustic soda and then into a steel tank. A slow stream of air is passed while the tank is filling after which the mixture is allowed to stand for 5 days and is then distilled. In the manufacture of formaldehyde by passing methanol vapour mixed with air over red hot silver gauze, the purification of the methanol by the above process prevents the rapid deterioration of the catalyst which results when crude methanol is employed.
