Abstract
122,192. Schuck, W. P. Jan. 9, 1918, [Convention date]. Catalytic materials.-A catalyst for use in hydrogenation, particularly of fatty oils, is prepared by mixing solutions of nickel or other nitrate and a reducing agent such as cane sugar and running the mixed solutions into a muffle maintained at 550-650‹ C. into which carbon dioxide is admitted. The product is allowed to cool in the mixture of carbon dioxide with the nitrogen liberated during the reaction. The proportions of nitrate and sugar are such that some free carbon remains in the product. The catalyst may be used at temperatures as low as 150‹ C. under atmospheric pressure.
