Methanol; oxygenated organic compounds. - In the production of methanol and other oxygenated organic compounds by the catalytic hydrogenation of carbon oxides at elevated temperature and pressure, mixtures containing a high percentage of inert gases are employed, and the operation is conducted in a circulatory system with a continuous removal of part of the circulating mixture enriched in inert gases and its replacement by fresh gas mixture in such proportions as to maintain a constant composition of the circulating mixture. Instead of using inert gases, mixtures containing a large excess of one of the reaction gases may be employed, the excess then functioning as an inert diluent. According to the example, power gas is first passed with steam over iron oxide to produce, after removal of the carbon dioxide formed, a gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the proportion of 1:2, together with a large percentage of nitrogen; the mixture is circulated under pressure over a methanol forming catalyst; residual gas is continuously withdrawn and replaced by fresh gas in a certain proportion so as to maintain the composition of the circulating gas constant at a given percentage of reaction gases.
