Abstract
270,489. Cheney, C. W. May 7, 1926. Hasp fastenings.-The hasp member and the bolt member, while in engagement and with one of these members attached to the lid, are slidable as a one - piece member with ratchet or one-way clutch engagement lengthwise on and along an attachment plate on the body of the expansible suitcase. As shown, the flyoff hinged hasp d secured to the lid a has its notched peg d<2> engaging a bolt-carrying member f with a boss g<2> for hand-operation of the bolt g that may be key-locked. A A spring h on the back of the member f carries a tooth h<2> for engagement with the ratchet teeth e<2> formed on the guide-plate e secured to body of the suitcase. The plate f is slidable in guides e<5> and may be moved freely in one direction, but the limb spring h requires tn be lifted bv hand to release the tooth h<2> before the lid can be moved upwardly to expand the casing. The closing edge of the lid engages under a projection i of the member f. In modifications, the ratchet pawl is carried by the hasp and only becomes engaged with the ratchet teeth when the hasp is in engagement with the bolt member; or, in place of the ratchet and pawl device shown, a one-way friction clutch device may be used. Specification 236,734 is referred to in the first Provisional Specifications.
