Continuous kilns. - In a kiln system comprising separate kilns 15 - - 21 connected for continuous working the ducts 23 between adjacent kilns are fitted each with a pair of spaced dampers 33, 40. between which dampered connections 35, 38 open into the duct, the former leading to a header flue 34 and the latter to a, waste heat flue 37. Between each damper 33 and the adjacent kiln is a further dampered connection 28 to an exhaust flue 20 in communication with a fan 30. In normal operation waste heat from a kiln under fire is passed through one or more adjacent kilns on its way to the stack, and any surplus combustion products may be passed to the waste heat flue 37 for use elsewhere, e.g. in a drier. When a kiln is cooling down air may be drawn therethrough to the header 34 and supplied to any other kiln of the series. Each kiln has a central outlet opening 22 communicating with a flue 23, the opposite end of which is connected to an annular inlet flue 45 in the next kiln. This flue extends beneath the fire-place and is connected thereto by channels 47 having flared delivery ports 48. The air or gas supply through the channels 47 of the various fire-places is equalized by blocks 49, which are varied in size according to their distance from the inlet to the flue 45. The fire-place openings may be divided horizontally by partitions 44, and fires may be built both on and beneath the partitions.
