Air, supplying; combustion products, returning to furnaces.- In a brick or like kiln part of the gases from the kiln is utilized to entrain a supply of air and after mixing therewith is delivered to the fire-places. As shown, the gases from furnaces 6 pass over the bag wall 4, downwardly through the bricks &c. in the kiln 5 and through the perforated floor 10, part of the gases then escaping through the pipes 12a to the chimney 11<a> and part passing through the pipes 12 to flues 16 arranged in the outer wall 1. The pipes 12, 12a are fitted with hoods 14 and respectively pass through and rest over apertures in bricks 13 which are supported on bricks 13<b>, 13<c> to form an intermediate floor. Each flue 16 is divided into two branches 17, 18, which are separated, by partitions 22, from fresh air flues in communication through ducts 21 with the atmosphere. The partitions 22 terminate some distance from the furnace 6 to form mixing-chambers from which the mixture of hot gases and air entrained and heated thereby is delivered to the furnace through apertures 20 in the side wall and openings in the arch 19 respectively. A hinged damper 23 is provided in each of the flues 17, 18, being normally held open by the flow of gases but arranged to close automatically to prevent back draught. Gas and air flues 16, 21 are arranged on each side of each fire-place 6. The pipes 12 may be replaced by pipes arranged to project horizontally into the space between the floors 10, 13 and surrounded by tubular hoods.
