Abstract
340,271. Tunnel kilns. WOODALLDUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and DUCKHAM, A. M., 136, Victoria Street, London. July 19, 1929, No. 22260. [Class 51 (ii).] In an open-ended tunnel kiln, air entering at the ends is diverted into flues in the walls by the draught of the kiln or of a suction fan, the wall flues at the inlet end for the goods being other than the usual exhaust flue provided at this end. In an annular kiln, which is shown developed in Fig. 2, the air entering the inlet end A passes through ports a into wall flues b connected to the chimney flue c. At the exit end F the air similarly passes through ports f to flues g, from which they are drawn bv a fan and delivered to flues h. From these flues the air passes through ports j to a roof flue r, and is used in part for combustion in the flues l, and in part for drying and preheating the goods in the inlet portion of the kiln. The combustion products from the flues l pass into the through tunnel damper-controlled ports l<1>, and are withdrawn through ports n and passed to wall flues o under control of dampers n<1>. Radial and circular flues may be provided in the travelling platform for the bottom heating of the goods, and the platform may have walls for preventing, to a large extent, contact between the goods and the heating gases. The platform may have openings for the escape of steam from the drying zone, and these are automatically closed when the goods reach a certain temperature by tiles supported on fusion cones.
