Abstract
268,559. Burns, W. April 23, 1926. Lateral-splash guards for vehicle wheels comprise an inverted V-shaped frame 7 having a part circular portion 8 at its vertex sprung into engagement with a fitting 4 on the hub cap or like part of the wheel and locked into engagement by a keeper 12, the frame having two downwardly extending parallel arms 10 upon which the mud-screen is slidably mounted, and the whole being adapted to rock on the wheel hub against the action of resilient means. The screen comprises a strip 15 of rubber &c. carried by a member 16 extending around its upper edge and secured to a plate 17 having beaded edges 18. The plate 17 is provided on its inside face with guide plates 20 sliding on the arms 10 which carry rubber buffers 11 and have their lower ends connected by a bar 13. The keeper 12 swivels on one arm of the frame and has a hooked end for engagement with the other arm. The fitting 4 has a peripheral groove to receive the part 8 of the frame and is mounted on a ball bearing on a bolt 5, rotation of the guard about the hub being restrained by a spring 24 adjustably connected at one end to the mud guard 27 by a, chain 25 and connected at its other end to a V- shaped wire stay 21 attached to eyes 9 on the frame 7. The Provisional Specification describes the lower ends of the frame 7 as being formed into short helices having horizontal axes, the screen having apertures threaded on the helices so that the frame 7 is held in engagement with the hub fitting without the use of the keeper, and the screen being, if desired, elastic, so that it is stretched when carried on the helices.
