Abstract

267,748. Coston, H. W. May 11, 1926. Combined buffer and draw-gear. - A railwayvehicle coupling of the central buffer type comprises a draw-bar 17, a yoke 11 adapted to tilt laterally of the draw-bar, a buffer head 1 connected to the yoke by pivoted bars 3 so as to move in parallelism therewith, and a spring 13 surrounding the draw-bar and acting between the yoke 11 and drag girder 15 on the vehicle to move ,the buffer head outwardly. The coupling head comprises a box-like structure 5 forming a guide for the bars 3 and carrying a hook 30<a> and pin 30 either of which may be used for securing the coupling link 31. The head 5 is pivoted to the draw-rod at 16 which is provided with spring abutments 14, 25 spaced apart by a tube 29. When two vehicles are coupled together the coupler head 5 moves along the bars 3 until the springs 13, 27 are at substantially equal tension, the tension on the spring 27 tending to keep the vehicles close coupled. Buffing pressure during running is taken up by the spring 13, whilst additional pull on the draw-bar is resisted by the spring 27 acting on the drag girder 15 and by the spring 13 acting through the sleeve 29.
